Expense of Spirit

What does it truly cost to spend our shame?
Is there a reason why we hoard it close?
Is it related to our fear of blame,
Or do we think there is some fatal dose
Which, if unleashed, will kill all that we love?
Is there a purpose to a shamefastness
Which is itself the very picture of
Inaction? Does it lead to happiness?
If not, why waste the hours chasing it,
Why try to keep our honor unbesmirched,
If, once we have the courage to admit
We do not need it, and it is unchurched,
We can be free? It is a social good,
Not individual, and so we should.
