Disavowal

I don't know who I tried to fool, that time.
It wasn't me, it wasn't you, I know.
Trying to do that would be a crime,
At least against intelligence, and so
I must have had some other target. Yet
As far as I'm aware, only we two,
We two far too mature to be upset,
Were even there. I couldn't have fooled you
Even if I tried, and I insist
I didn't mean to, so I didn't try.
An immanence, an aura must exist
Of Something Else to fool - I don't know why,
But surely I could not have been that thick
Without it - or if so, it makes me sick.
