Contemplation

Days like this are made for contemplation,
For pondering how pasts have changed the present.
And, spent in just such ratiocination,
I must admit, for me, it's almost pleasant
To spend a day in fasting and in thought,
For though the body may complain, the soul
Is by the act of contemplation brought
Into a better state, feeling more whole,
More calm within itself, more sure of what
It chooses to accomplish, and will do.
For all of that, of course, there is the gut,
Which does complain at least enough for two.
But still, the day is quite worthwhile when
I think of what I know I'd do again.
