Extenuate

Speak of me as I am; do not exaggerate.
I know myself, as well as any man,
And know therefore enough to satiate
The greatest lust for gossip. Oh, I can,
If need and wish corroborate, unfold
A tale that, if to you it should be told,
Freeze up your sense of wonder, and expel
All comfortable fantasies of me.
Of course, I will not, and I would not, tell
Such a grim story, bar necessity.
And yet I think it might be good for you
To yet recall the only the thing I am.
Do not look from a rosy point of view,
But see and speak the truth. Who gives a damn?
