Tradeoffs

Sometimes things work out better than you planned;
More often, though, they're far from subtly worse.
And though protectively you may rehearse
The reasons why you think you understand
The problems and frustrations near at hand,
You can't anticipate the universe,
And something there will make you want to curse
When all that you had hoped for has been canned.
Yet we keep living and keep moving through
The pain and disappointment that we feel
Because those triumphs, though they're rare, are real,
And justify the rest of what we do.
A thousand failures are worth a success
If that is used for joy and happiness.
