Marvel

Fountains don't waste water, though they should:
So much in motion, and so little lost
Seems like a miracle, and yet who would
Say engineers are petty gods? Embossed
Upon our minds there is a simple thought:
"I could do that." Once that is uttered, we,
No matter what the wonder that was wrought,
Ignore the doing, and self-centeredly
Marvel at ourselves. We think of Man
And not of men (or women) who must act
Each individually, and think we can
Do that which someone else has done in fact.
But this folly. Better to marvel more,
And only swell at what we've done before.
