Dropsy

Rain is not, and never was, God's tears
It would be quite poetic if it were,
And every drop, though thousands of wet years
Were holy sorrow, signs of heaven's stir
At earthly troubles. But to so believe
Would be to say the earth, and all that drinks,
Requires God sufficiently to grieve.
For anyone who rationally thinks
About the rain, will see it is required
By all God's creatures; and if so, that God
Would have to cry as much as we desired
In order that the grazers and their sod
Might have their water - which we also need.
Do we need God to cry? That's a harsh creed.
