Silence

The time of quiet is a time I cherish
For calm hearts holding hands and sharing love
Is far too fragile, and will quickly perish
At the merest introduction of
External forces, whatever they be,
And so these hours must be tightly held
So that they don't sneak off too rapidly.
This is why it seems I am compelled
To hold my breath and cling to you so tight
When we are seated, silent, side by side.
For clinging to you then simply feels right,
And may protect against the sudden slide
Out of contentment. Quiet, calm, as one
Is best, no matter what else might be done.
