I loved you long enough I came to know
The meaning of each changing facial phase:
How long the shadows in your eyelids grow,
The little smile that for a moment plays
Around your eyes, but not your mouth, and worse,
The other one, that does the opposite,
The way you almost stutter when you curse,
And glance around to see who noticed it,
How when you meet my eyes you always pause
Then turn away before you ever speak,
The tightening that negligibly draws
A little extra whiteness in your cheek
In your confusion...all of which should be
Forgotten at first opportunity.
